
Haughey Wins Twice to Lead Wolverine Women on Day One at Iowa

» The third-ranked Wolverines won all nine swimming events to jump out to leads over Iowa and Denver after the first day of action in Iowa City.
» Siobhán Haughey won a pair of events, setting a pool record in the 200-yard freestyle and later winning the 200-yard IM by more than four seconds. She also swam a leg on the closing 400-yard freestyle relay.
» Maggie MacNeil posted the ninth-fastest time in school history -- and ninth-fastest time in the NCAA -- in winning the 50-yard freestyle.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team won nine of 11 events and saw four swimmers earn NCAA "B" cuts to open leads over Iowa (140-64) and Denver (161-44) following the first day of action on Friday (Nov. 2) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
Senior Siobhán Haughey was one of the top performers on Friday, winning the 200-yard freestyle with an NCAA "B'"cut and pool record (1:45.43). Others to achieve "B" cuts included junior Miranda Tucker in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.39) and freshman Maggie MacNeil in the 50-yard freestyle (22.46). MacNeil got to the wall narrowly ahead of senior Catie DeLoof (22.56). Following her record-setting swim in the 100-yard butterfly two weeks ago, MacNeil was back to moving up the record boards on Friday, posting the ninth-fastest time in program history and the ninth-fastest time in the country.
The Wolverines looked sharp from the get-go. Sophomore Sierra Schmidt cracked the 10-minute mark in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:59.76) and combined on a 1-2 finish with senior Katie Duggan. Senior Taylor Garcia took the 100-yard backstroke (54.22), while junior Vanessa Krause did the same in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.47).
Haughey returned to the pool and dominated the 200-yard IM, winning by more than four seconds (2:00.13) over sophomore teammates Kate Krolikowski and Emma Cleason.
The Wolverines also bookended the night by winning both relays. The foursome of Garcia, Tucker, MacNeil and DeLoof won the 200-yard medley relay at the outset (1:38.69), while Haughey, senior Becca Postoll, Tucker and Cleason ended the night with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:22.79).
Sophomore Nikki Canale led the Wolverines in the diving well, taking second on one-meter (302.25) and finishing third on three-meter (292.00).
The three teams will conclude their double dual meet Saturday (Nov. 3) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. CDT.
