SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team participated at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Notre Dame this past weekend (Oct. 18-21).
Freshman Andrew Fenty earned four wins on his way to the quarterfinals, including a straight-sets win over Ben Vandixhorn (Northwestern), 6-2, 6-1, in the Round of 32. Taking on Martin Joyce of Ohio State in the quarterfinals, Fenty earned a 7-5 first-set victory but dropped the final two sets, 1-6, 5-7, to bow out of the tournament.
Sophomore Mattias Siimar saw his run in the tournament end in the round of 16 to Notre Dame's Tristan McCormick. In the first set, Siiimar battled to a tiebreak, ultimately dropping the set, 6-7 (2), then fell short in the second set, 5-7. His two wins in the prior rounds were in straight sets, defeating Wisconsin's Robert Krill (6-4, 6-4) and Notre Dame's Daniel Rayl (6-2, 6-4).
In doubles play, the duo of Fenty and Siimar earned two victories before falling in the quarterfinals, while the combination of junior Connor Johnston and senior Gabe Tishman also advanced to the quarterfinals before bowing out to Notre Dame's Richard Ciammarra and McCormick, 2-8.
Overall, Michigan earned a total of nine singles victories over the weekend and teamed up for seven wins in doubles play.
Michigan will be back at the Varsity Tennis Center next weekend (Oct. 26-29) when it hosts the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championship.
