ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan men's tennis team saw three of its four singles players advance to the quarterfinals at the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championship, but their runs ended on Saturday (Oct. 27).
The Maize and Blue's participants earned two wins apiece in singles play. The trio of junior Connor Johnston, freshman Patrick Maloney and senior Gabe Tishman earned two wins in the rounds of 32 and 16, respectively, before bowing out of the tournament in the quarterfinals.
Johnston earned straight-sets wins over Nebraska's Isaac Nortey and Iowa's Jonas Larson. Maloney came from behind against Jason Kerst (Iowa), dropping the first set 6-0, before storming back, 6-0 and 6-2. Johnston's second win came in straight sets against Purdue's Mateo Julio. Tishman also had two straight-sets wins, defeating Chris Dean (Nebraska), 6-4, 6-2 and taking down Iowa's Joe Tyler 7-6, winning the tiebreaker, and 6-4 in the second set.
Sophmore Harrison Brown earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over John Carlin (Michigan State) in the Round of 64 and a second triumph at the hands of Alan Sweet of Wisconsin in the Round of 32, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles, the duos of Brown and Tishman, and Johnston and Maloney each earned two wins apiece.
Michigan will return to action next weekend, Friday through Sunday (Nov. 2-4) when they travel to Sarasota, Florida, for the Lakewood Ranch Invite.
