The Inverness Intercollegiate History
• Michigan has played in six Inverness Intercollegiate since the tournament began in 2000.
• U-M competed in the inaugural event in 2000, tying for ninth (306-298-305/909). Playing as an individual, Scott Hayes won the event in a scorecard playoff after finishing with an even-par 213 (71-72-70). Seven years later the Wolverines returned to the event in 2007 and finished 15th (909).
• Over the past six years, the Maize and Blue have made four trips to the Rockets home event -- 2011 (t-7th, 301); 2012 (t-9th, 900); 2015 (3rd, 884) and 2016 (3rd, 862)
• Last season, Nick Carlson used a final-round 67 (-4), to tie for first with Duke's Jake Shuman, setting the event's 54-hole record with 209 totals. In an individual playoff, Carlson parred the first playoff hole to claim the outright title. In 2015, Kyle Mueller was the medalist runner-up with a one-over 214 (70-74-70).
• As a team last year, Michigan's 270 (-14) final round set the U-M and Inverness Intercollegiate single-round record, breaking the U-M mark by two shots and Inverness' by seven.
• The Wolverines had a visit to Inverness Club during the 2009 NCAA Championships. Finishing sixth (296-285-287/868) in the stroke play team qualifier, U-M was a national semifinalist in the new match play format to determine the team champion. Michigan defeated USC, 3-2, in the quarterfinal, before losing to eventual national champion Texas A&M, 3-1-1, in the semifinal. » NCAA Finals | MP: USC | MP: Texas A&M
REVIEWING 2016-17
Paced by the trio of junior Kyle Mueller, sophomore Nick Carlson and senior Reed Hrynewich, the 2016-17 Michigan men's golf team earned its third straight trip to the NCAA postseason, posted two team wins and had four Wolverines take home medalist honors. U-M finished the regular season with five top-five team finishes, including titles at the Dayton Flyer Invitational (Oct. 17-18) and the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 4-5). In the postseason, the Wolverines closed ninth at the Big Ten Championships and continued their postseason with a third straight visit to an NCAA Regional. WOLVERINE BITES
• Michigan made its third straight NCAA regional appearance as a team last season, finishing 10th at the Washington Regional. Kyle Mueller led the Wolverines, tying for eighth individually and missing advancing to his second NCAA Finals by a single shot.
• Last season, U-M won two team titles -- the Dayton Flyer Invitational and Desert Mountain Intercollegiate -- while adding four individual titles and two runners-up. All four medalists are returning Wolverines -- Mueller (twice), Nick Carlson and Ian Kim.
• Mueller earned his third straight All-Big Ten selection and second straight first-team accolade last season. He became just the second Wolverine in program history to earn three All-Big Ten honors, joining Michael Harris, who was a three-time first teamer (1998-2000). Mueller has second-team honors as a freshman (2015) and back-to-back years of first-team selections (2016 & 2017).
• In addition to his Big Ten honor, Mueller garnered PING All-America honorable mention by the Golf Coaches Association of America, becoming the 10th Wolverine to earn an All-America accolade and the first in six years (2011).
• Mueller and Carlson both competed at the U.S. Amateur this summer. Mueller made his third straight appearance and advanced to match play for the second time, reaching the round of 32. Carlson made his second straight trip after his run to the Final Four in 2016.
