NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Michigan men's golfers Bryce Evon, Kyle Mueller and Tom Swanson are among 260 Division I golfers named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar recipient today (Wednesday, July 26) by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
While Evon and Mueller earn their first GCAA accolade, Swanson becomes the sixth Wolverine to earn the prestigious academic honor multiple times. Overall, 15 different Wolverines have been honored by the GCAA with All-America Scholar status.
With plans to go into education and teaching, Evon graduated this spring with a business administration degree from U-M's prestigious Stephen M. Ross School of Business. In his final season, he started 10 of 11 events and averaged 75.07 strokes per round, including tying a career-low 68 three times. Tying for 33rd in his second Big Ten Championships appearance, he helped U-M to a third straight NCAA regional, where he tied for 34th.
Swanson, who graduated in April with a sport management degree, completed his four-year career with starts in 10 of his 12 events as a senior. Posting a 75.58 per round average, he tied his career-best 54-hole tournament total with a 212 (-4) tally at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate and went a perfect 3-0 in Big Ten Match Play. He started 32 of 37 tournaments in his career.
All-Big Ten first teamer Mueller improved upon his already stellar U-M career, breaking his own single-season scoring record with a 71.36 per round average. In his 13 starts, he posted six top-10 finishes and was the medalist at the Windon Memorial (Sept. 25-26) as well as the Aggie Invitational (April 1-2). Mueller became the first Wolverine in six years to earn GCAA All-America honorable mention and added a spot on the GCAA's PING Division I All-Midwest Region team for a third consecutive season.
In order to eligible for the Division I scholar award, juniors and seniors must carry a minimum of a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average in addition to a 76.0 stroke average or better.
