ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, the No. 17-ranked University of Michigan baseball team surrendered four runs in the top of the sixth to drop a 4-2 contest to the visiting Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday (May 7) inside the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Despite the loss on Sunday, Michigan won the series thanks to a 6-0 shutout victory on Friday (May 5) and a 5-2 win on Saturday (May 6).
The first four and a half innings were scoreless on both sides of the scoreboard, but Michigan rallied for a two-run lead in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Miles Lewis led off the inning with a walk, and a bunt single from sophomore Nick Poirier gave the Wolverines two men on for the first time in the contest. A sacrifice bunt from sophomore Jonathan Engelmann then pushed both runners into scoring position, and sophomore Jimmy Kerr followed with a clutch RBI infield single to score Lewis and put Michigan up by one. With a runner still on third, senior Harrison Wenson laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Poirier and give Michigan the 2-0 lead.
The Buckeyes responded promptly as junior lefty Michael Hendrickson found himself in a bases-loaded situation in the top of the sixth. Sophomore lefty William Tribucher took the mound in the jam and surrendered a grand slam, which gave Ohio State a 4-2 lead.
Following Tribucher's departure in the top of the seventh, freshman Tommy Henry was called to the mound. He struck out one batter before surrendering a single, but senior Mac Lozer came into the game and recorded a double-play ball to end the inning.
Lozer returned to the mound in the top of the eighth and stuck out the side before handing the ball to senior closer Jackson Lamb in the ninth. Lamb surrendered one hit but struck out three batters to quickly end the inning and send Michigan back to the dugout.
The Wolverines put men on base in the bottom of the sixth and eighth innings but were ultimately unable to score again in the game.
Six different Wolverines recorded a hit in the outing, and five pitchers saw game time for the Wolverines. Hendrickson tossed 5.1 innings in the effort and was just one strikeout shy of tying his career high with seven. Overall, the Michigan pitching staff struck out 15 batters in the effort.
The Wolverines will return to action on Tuesday (May 9) as they take on Central Michigan in the first of a two-game home-and-home series. First pitch against the visiting Chippewas is set for 6 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. [ Tickets ]
