BALTIMORE, Md. -- An even-par 70 by sophomore Nick Carlson and a 71 (+1) from senior Bryce Evon helped the University of Michigan men's golf team post a 288 in Saturday's (April 29) second round and jump three spots to eighth with a 584 total at the Big Ten Championships held at the Baltimore Country Club.
"As a team we played better today," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "All five of the guys were competing hard the whole day, and we're in it for the team score. The final round tomorrow will feel a lot different than the first two days with colder temperatures and possibly some rain, and we will be ready for that."
"We're highly motivated to play our best round of the event and move up the leaderboard," added Whitten. "Everyone is swinging the club nicely and expects to play their best golf in the final round, which is something we've done multiple times this year."
Starting off the back nine in today's second round, the Wolverines played their first nine holes six over as three Wolverines -- Carlson (7 pars, birdie, bogey), Evon (9 pars) and senior Reed Hrynewich (9 pars) -- made the turn even.
Reaching the front side, Carlson used three birdies (Nos. 3, 5, 7) to erase three bogeys and lead U-M with an even-par 70 as he moved into the top 10 and is tied for seventh at 141 (+1). Overall, he is six shots back of second-day leader -- Illinois' Edoardo Lipparelli (69-66/135, -5).
Evon followed Carlson's path as two birdies (Nos. 4 and 8) of his own helped eliminate two bogeys, however, a closing bogey on his ninth hole pushed him to one over par. After an opening 76, Evon moved up to a tie for 37th with a 147 36-hole total.
Despite back-to-back bogeys to open the front side, Hrynewich used the successes on the back side to finish the round with 16 total pars and post a 72 (+2). He is tied for 40th at 148 (76-72), along with junior Kyle Mueller (73-75). Senior Tom Swanson bounced back from an opening 84 to card a 75 total. He is 68th at 159.
Illinois maintained its lead with a second-round 279 (-1). The Fighting Illini hold a 20-shot lead heading into the final round with a 548 (-12) 36-hole total. Purdue (284-284) and Northwestern (286-282) are tied for second at 568.
The conference championships conclude tomorrow with a final 18 on Sunday (April 30) at 8 a.m.
