BALTIMORE, Md. -- With final-round scores of 72 by senior Bryce Evon and 73 from sophomore Nick Carlson, the University of Michigan men's golf team closed the 2017 Big Ten Championships with a 294 to finish ninth today (Sunday, April 30) with an 878 54-hole total at the Baltimore Country Club.
The Wolverines will now tune into the Golf Channel on Thursday (May 4) to learn their NCAA regional fate with a live selection show at noon. There are six NCAA regional sites -- LSU, Middle Tennessee State, Purdue, Stanford, Texas and Washington -- being played Monday through Wednesday (May 15-17).
"The week was a struggle overall for sure," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "Today's final round was headed in a better direction, but we weren't able to finish it in the final six holes. It was never the same issue repeating itself, but we couldn't keep momentum going for long enough stretches."
"We have a very good chance to be selected for the postseason again, and I hope we get a chance to keep playing and accomplishing more of our goals," added Whitten. "The guys have done some outstanding things this year, and I still think our best golf is in front of us."
The Wolverines got off to a slow start to the championships, posting a 296 team total in Friday's (April 28) opening round. Despite a team-best 71 (+1) from Carlson, U-M found itself 11th after 18 holes. With Carlson improving by a shot in Saturday's (April 29) second round and with an even-par 70, U-M added in a 71 (+1) from Evon and senior Reed Hrynewich's 72 to rally with a 288 and improve three positions to eighth on the leaderboard.
The duo of Evon and Carlson guided U-M on the final day as the Maize and Blue tallied a 294 team third-round total. Evon paced play with a 72, while Carlson closed with a 73 to finish with a 214 total and post U-M's top individual finish (tie for 16th). Carlson's finish makes it 31 straight years a Wolverine has ended among the top 20 at the conference tournament. After opening with a 76, Evon's closing 71 and 72 gave him a 219 total and tie for 33rd individually.
"Nick and Bryce were incredibly consistent, and aside from one or two breaks that did not go their way per round," said Whitten. "They are playing very good golf and should have a lot of confidence going forward."
The rest of the Wolverine starting championship squad saw Hrynewich tie for 41st at 222 (76-72-74), junior Kyle Mueller tied for 44th at 223 (73-75-75), and senior Tom Swanson was 66th at 234 (84-75-75).
Following an opening 269 (-11), Illinois vaulted itself to the lead and never looked back winning its third straight, and eighth in nine years, conference title by 16 shots with a 829 (-11) total. Northwestern was the runner-up at 845.
