BALTIMORE, Md. -- Sophomore Nick Carlson carded a 71 (+1), and the University of Michigan men's golf team tallied a 296 first-round team total today (Friday, April 28) to position the Wolverines 11th after the first day of the Big Ten Championships at the Baltimore Country Club.
"I thought as a team we scored a lot higher than the way we played today," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "I know the guys all really like the golf course and will be ready to go tomorrow.
"Everyone talks about the challenging greens at this golf course," added Whitten "However, the way we will battle that is by being in position with our ball striking. The guys are all swinging well enough that we can make a lot of progress each of the next two rounds."
Carlson, in his second conference championship, made the turn even after using a birdie on No. 4 to erase a bogey on No. 3. Mirroring his play on the backside, he deleted a bogey on No. 14 with a birdie on No. 16. However, a follow-up bogey on his 17th hole saw Carlson go one over, where he finished with a 71 (+1) and a tie for 16th.
Junior Kyle Mueller finished two shots back of Carlson with his opening 73 (+2), tying for 28th after the first day. After bogeying three of his first four holes, Mueller battled with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 to get back to one over. A fourth front-side bogey on No. 8 had him turn two over. A birdie on the 12th eliminated a bogey on the 10th hole as he remaining two over through 14 holes. A missed opportunity on the 15th yield a sixth bogey, closing with a 73.
Rounds of 76 from seniors Reed Hrynewich and Bryce Evon put them tied for 50th, while senior Tom Swanson is 70th after an 84.
Ninth-ranked Illinois took a commanding 14 stroke lead after opening with a 269 (-11). Four Illini are among the top 10 individually, led by Dylan Meyer's 63 (-7).
