ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team got a second-period goal from junior Tony Calderone and 33 saves from freshman goaltender Hayden Lavigne but ultimately settled for a weekend split with fifth-ranked Minnesota, falling, 4-1, Saturday (March 4) inside Yost Ice Arena.
The first period was marred with penalties -- five in total -- including three kills from the visiting Gophers. Calderone had two very good chances on the power play, his second missing wide of the net from a tough angle. On the other end, moments after Minnesota's Vinni Lettieri dinged one off the crossbar, Rem Pitlick broke the deadlock to put the Gophers up 1-0.
Sophomore Cooper Marody, back in the lineup after missing last night's 5-3 Michigan win, appeared to tie it with 16.7 seconds left in the period, but the call on the ice was reversed following review.
The Gophers added a pair of goals in the second period to extend their lead to 3-0 before Calderone put the home team on the scoreboard with just under four minutes left. Marody made the initial play, circling the net and drawing defenders to him, allowing Calderone to sneak in behind the defense for a one-on-one chance with Minnesota goaltender Eric Schierhorn. All alone in front, Calderone had no trouble getting it by Schierhorn glove-side, trimming the Gophers' lead to 3-1.

The Wolverines had several good scoring opportunities to cut into Minnesota's lead during the third period but could not get any of them past Schierhorn. Marody and sophomore Joseph Cecconi had two chances in rapid succession with nine minutes to play, but the best one came off the stick of junior Cutler Martin, who clanged iron off an odd-man rush with eight minutes left.
Lavigne was pulled with 3:30 left in a last-ditch effort to find a goal, but Michigan came up empty and Minnesota converted on the empty-netter with 1:51 left to seal it.
The Wolverines will close out the regular season at home next weekend (March 10-11), welcoming Penn State to Yost Ice Arena for a two-game set. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. for both games.
