NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan baseball team picked up two wins over the Lipscomb Bisons on Friday (March 10) in an afternoon doubleheader to improve to 11-3 on the season. The Wolverines first rallied for an 8-2 victory in game one before forcing a come-from-behind 4-3 victory in the top of the ninth inning of game two.
Junior lefthanded pitcher Oliver Jaskie tossed a gem in the first contest of the day, improving to 2-0 on the year. The lefty threw six complete innings, striking out a career-high 11 batters and allowing just one run on three hits.
The Wolverines scored first in the first game, plating a run in the top of the second inning to take the defining lead of the day. Senior Harrison Wenson led off the inning with a strikeout but reached first when the ball went past the catcher, and he took second on a Lipscomb throwing error. From there, two groundouts allowed Wenson to move up another base and score for a 1-0 lead.
Senior Johnny Slater added a run in the bottom of the second, sending a double to the left-centerfield gap and scoring on an RBI from junior Jake Bivens.
The Wolverines owned a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth, when a triple and a fielder's choice cut the lead to one. Michigan responded quickly, however, adding two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run from junior Drew Lugbauer.
Lipscomb picked up another run in the bottom of the same inning with a solo homer, but Michigan exploded for four runs in the ninth for an 8-2 lead. Wenson led off the at-bat with a walk, and senior Michael Brdar followed with a double to put two men in scoring position. A walk to sophomore Nick Poirier then loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly from Lugbauer moved up every runner. One out later, a three-run shot off the bat of Slater cleared the bases to put Michigan up by six. The three-run homer marked Slater's first of the season.
Freshman lefty Tommy Henry closed out the game for the Wolverines, shutting down Lipscomb in order in the ninth. He tossed three complete innings and struck out three to earn his first career save.
Using the momentum left over from game one, Michigan scored first in the second game of the doubleheader as well, plating a run in the top of the third inning on a solo homer from sophomore Jimmy Kerr. The home run marked the first of his career.
Lipscomb answered with a run in the bottom of the same inning and added another in the fourth to force a 2-1 lead. After three scoreless innings, a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth pushed Lipscomb up by a 3-1 score.
Despite trailing since the fourth, the Wolverines came out in the top of the ninth refusing defeat. Sophomore Miles Lewis led off the inning with a single through the right side, and a walk to Wenson gave Michigan two men on. Brdar then reached on a Lipscomb fielding error that allowed Lewis to score from second. With two men still on base, sophomore Jonathan Engelmann sent the game-winner through the left side, scoring Brdar and Wenson and giving Michigan a 4-3 lead.
Michigan held the one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth as senior Jackson Lamb came in and recorded three consecutive outs en route to his third save of the season.
Junior righty Ryan Nutof started on the mound for Michigan in the second game of the doubleheader and threw five complete innings. He allowed just two runs on seven hits and struck out eight to tie his career high.
Sophomore William Tribucher came in for relief duties in the sixth and tossed three innings, giving up a run on just three hits. He walked none.
Overall, Michigan scored 12 runs on the day, totaling 14 hits and walking seven times.
Though the Wolverine offense was clutch, the team's pitching staff laid the foundation for two wins in the doubleheader. Michigan pitchers struck out a combined 27 batters on the day, beating the staff's previous season high of 12 strikeouts in both contests. Additionally, the Wolverines struck out a Lipscomb batter in all but one inning -- the bottom of the ninth in game two.
