
Wolverines Face Chaminade on Day Two of Maui Jim Maui Invitational

» In a thrilling opening game, Michigan had a 77-75 setback against LSU and will face host Chaminade on the second day of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.
» Charles Matthews had a career-high 28 points and eight rebounds in U-M's loss, while Moritz Wagner's 24-point game is his first 20-plus point contest of the season and sixth of his career.
» Michigan is playing in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational for the fifth time in program history. The Wolverines won the tournament in 1985 and 1988, which was a precursor to its first national title.
» U-M head coach John Beilein is making his second appearance in Maui after taking the Wolverines in 2011 (third) and holds a 2-2 all-time record.

Michigan continues its 2017 Maui Jim Maui Invitational with host Chaminade on Tuesday (Nov. 21) at the Lahaina Civic Center. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. HT (8 p.m. ET) with the game on ESPN2. The Wolverines will face either Cal or VCU on the final day, Wednesday (Nov. 22). A win against Chaminade would see a Noon HT (5 p.m.) tip, while a loss would be a 9:30 a.m. HT (2:30 p.m. ET) start.
A LITTLE ABOUT CHAMINADE
• Chaminade has opened the season 2-0 with wins over Alaska, 71-58, and Alaska Anchorage, 71-65, in the Hawaii-Alaska Challenge in Anchorage. The Silverswords lost their first game with an 83-56 loss to Notre Dame in the opening round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational.
• Four players are scoring in double figures for the Silverswords, led by 12.0 points per game from Justin Bridges.
• Chaminade is coming off an 18-11 season in 2016-17, including a 13-7 mark and a fourth-place finish in the Pacific West Conference (PWC)
• This is the 33rd year that Chaminade is hosting the Maui Invitational, with the team's best finish coming in 1984, when the Silverswords were runner-up to Providence.
• Chaminade head coach Eric Bovaird is in his seventh season with the Silverswords, entering the season with a record of 89-76, the third-best in school history.
MAUI JIM MAUI INVITATIONAL QUICK HITTERS
• In a back-and-forth affair, U-M rallied to take a nine-point lead after trailing by seven to LSU only to see it the Tigers have a rally of their own to go on a 15-6 closing run to win, 77-75.
• Charles Matthews scored a career-high 28 points against LSU, making a career-best 10 field goals as well as setting career-bests for free throws (seven) and free throw attempts (10), while grabbing a career-high eight rebounds. The career day was his second 20-plus point game in U-M's four games.
• Moritz Wagner's 24 points against LSU are his first 20-plus points in a contest this season and sixth of his career. He was just two points shy of tying his career best, 26 vs. Louisville in the 2017 NCAA Tournament.
• Matthews and Wagner accounted for 52 of U-M's 75 points as well as 15 of 29 rebounds against LSU.
THIS AND THAT
• In near mirror images of each other, U-M has scored nearly the same number of points in each of its first halves as the Wolverines are reading and trying to crack the code of what their opponents are doing. In fact, U-M led by just two against North Florida (32-30), one against Central Michigan (32-31) and trailed by one against Southern Miss. (33-32) and by two against LSU (31-29).
• After halftime adjustments, U-M is shooting 50.8 percent and used scoring runs of 18-1 vs North Florida, 18-8 vs. CMU and 18-1 vs. Southern Miss help seal the wins. U-M had a 15-7 run to take a nine-point lead against LSU, but could not maintain it as it lost, 77-75.
• Comparing the first half to the second half
     -- U-M 1st: 41.2 FG%, 13.8 rpg and scoring 31.3 ppg
     -- OPT 1st: 49.0 FG%, 17.0 rpg and scoring 31.3 ppg
     -- U-M 2nd: 50.8 FG%, 17.3 rpg and 42.2 ppg
     -- OPT 2nd: 43.9%, 13.5 rpg and 32.5 ppg
• So far, the Wolverines have posted 73.5 points per game early this season, with a season-high 86 in the opener against North Florida.
• U-M has four players averaging in double figures with Charles Matthews leading at 16.8, with Moritz Wagner just behind at 16.0. Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman is producing 12.0 per game, while Duncan Robinson is averaging 11.5.

• Moritz Wagner started off the season producing back-to-back double-doubles. He has doubled his career output with those two after recording just one in the previous two seasons.
• He posted a career-best 12 in the season opener against North Florida and followed with 11 against Central Michigan.
• In addition to his 9.0 boards per game, he is averaging 16.0 points per game.
