LAHAINA, Hawai'i -- Playing in its second game of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, the University of Michigan men's basketball team shot a blistering 64.9 percent overall while connecting on 15 3-pointers as the Wolverines cruised past Chaminade, 102-64, at the Lahaina Civic Center.
With the win, Michigan will play for fifth place in the tournament against VCU, which defeated Cal earlier in the day. The game is set for noon HST (5 p.m. EST) and broadcast on ESPN2.
Junior Charles Matthews was impressive throughout, leading all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-8 shooting and a game-high 10 rebounds in 30 minutes of action. Among Michigan's five players to reach double figures were senior Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman (17 points, 6-8 FG), Duncan Robinson (14 points), Moritz Wagner (10 points) and freshman Jordan Poole (10 points). Abdur-Rahkman added a team-best five assists in the game.
Michigan surpassed the 60 percent shooting mark in both halves as the Wolverines set a program single-game record for points scored in the tournament. Michigan's previous record was 91 points, set twice during the 1988 event in victories over Vanderbilt and Oklahoma.
The Wolverines also established or tied single-game tournament records in scoring margin (38), field-goal percentage (64.9), assists (22), three-pointers made (15), three-point attempts (28), three-point percentage (53.6), steals (nine), turnover low (eight) and blocks (six).
Matthews sparked U-M with 15 first-half points on the strength of 6-of-6 shooting to go with seven rebounds. In fact, Matthews logged almost all of those stats in the opening 10 minutes of play, save for a last-second 3-pointer to give the Wolverines a 44-25 lead.
Matthews' play helped U-M avoid the slow first-half starts that have occurred in the team's previous four games of this young season. U-M connected on four of five shots to start the game in building a quick 11-3 advantage before extending the advantage to 21-11 with 11:37 to play on a deep triple from Robinson. Poole then hit a triple and followed with a dunk at the 7:52 mark to complete runs of 7-0 and 14-2 as U-M upped the margin to 30-13.
The second half started in much the same fashion. Chaminade connected for an early triple before U-M ripped off seven straight points for a 51-28 lead. Michigan sealed the victory by converting 14 of 16 shots at one point and punctuating the performance with a lopsided 18-2 run that turned a 73-51 game into a 91-53 margin.
