Hua Wins Singles Title at ITA Regional

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Runhao Hua of the University of Michigan men's tennis team won six straight singles matches en route to the singles title at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Monday (Oct. 23) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Hua matched up against fellow classmate and teammate Alex Knight in the final singles match. After falling in the first set, 2-6, Hua rallied to a 6-3 second set win and a 7-6 (4) victory in the third set.
The Shanghai, China, native battled to a three-set win in the quarterfinals over Notre Dame's Alex Lebedev (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) and then earned a trip to the final match by beating Western Michigan's Maik Steiner (6-1, 3-6, 6-2) in the semifinals.
Earlier in the day, Hua and Knight teamed up in the doubles finals, falling short to Wisconsin's duo of Chema Carranza and Josef Dodridge, 7-5, 3-6, 10-12. The senior pairing sailed through the first five rounds with victories en route to the final.
Knight controlled each of his first five singles matches, winning each in straight sets.
Freshman Mattias Siimar had an impressive tournament, earning three singles victories en route to a quarterfinal matchup with Ohio State's Joyce, ultimately falling 7-6 (6), 6-7 (3), 2-6.
Michigan will return to action next weekend when part of the team travels to East Lansing, Michigan, for the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championship (Oct. 26-29). The remaining members of the squad will head west to the University of Southern California for the SoCal Intercollegiate Championships (Oct. 26-29).
