
Women's Swimming and Diving Aims to Defend Title at SMU Classic

The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team (1-0) gets an early-season test against some of the nation's best teams at the SMU Classic, held Friday and Saturday (Oct. 13-14) at the Lewisville Westside Natatorium in Lewisville, Texas. Action begins at 6:30 p.m. CT each day.
FORMAT
The SMU Classic is a six-team meet run over two days in a six-lane pool. Each team is comprised of eight swimmers and one diver. Michigan will be represented by junior Yirong Bi, junior Catie DeLoof, senior Gabby DeLoof, junior Siobhán Haughey, sophomore Vanessa Krause, junior Becca Postoll, senior Clara Smiddy, sophomore Miranda Tucker and freshman diver Nikki Canale.
For the second consecutive year, Michigan will face contingents from SMU, UCLA, Louisville, USC and Miami (Fla.). Of the six teams in the field, Louisville had the highest finish at last year's NCAA Championships (6th), followed by USC (9th), Michigan (11th), UCLA (20th) and Miami (39th). SMU did not score.
A swimmer may swim three events per day, but one of those must be a relay. There are championship and consolation heats for each individual swimming race. Each team will enter one swimmer per heat. There is only one heat for relays.

WOLVERINE BITES
• Michigan is looking to win the SMU Classic for the second consecutive year. It scored 325 points in last year's competition, one better than Louisville. Seven of the nine student-athletes going this year competed last year; the new faces are Miranda Tucker and Nikki Canale.
• The Wolverines swept the first batch of the Big Ten weekly awards. Siobhán Haughey was named Swimmer of the Week, while Nikki Canale received both Diver and Freshman of the Week. [ Awards and Honors ]
• The Wolverines are ranked sixth in the first College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll, released Oct. 4. [ Poll ]
• Five swimmers have already combined for nine NCAA 'B' standards: Siobhán Haughey in the 50-yard freestyle (22.78), 100-yard freestyle (48.57) and 200-yard freestyle (1:45.71); Catie DeLoof in the 50-yard freestyle (22.90) and 100-yard freestyle (49.26); Clara Smiddy in the 100-yard backstroke (54.32) and 200-yard backstroke (1:57.51); Yirong Bi in the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.30) and Taylor Garcia in the 100-yard backstroke (53.83). Diver Nikki Canale also has qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships on one-meter (274.80). At last year's SMU Classic, Michigan gained 21 NCAA time standards (20 B, 1 A).
• Ten members of the team made their Michigan debuts against Oakland on Sept. 29: freshmen Nikki Canale, Emma Cleason, Christy Cutshaw, Alex Hughes, Claire Maiocco, Alexis Margett, Kate Krolikowski, Sierra Schmidt and transfer Taylor Garcia and Miranda Tucker.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wolverines won every event in a 203-90 win over Oakland back on Sept. 29. The two teams, along with Calvin College, were back the next day (Sept. 30) for the Michigan Water Carnival. [ Recaps: Oakland | Michigan Water Carnival ]
