ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a late first-half goal from sophomore Francis Atuahene in the 43rd minute and an early second-half goal from classmate Robbie Mertz in the 48th minute, the University of Michigan men's soccer team defeated the Detroit Titans, 2-0, Wednesday (Sept. 28) on a rainy night at U-M Soccer Stadium.
After a slow first 20 minutes of chances in the opening stanza, the Wolverines found their stride offensively with a consistent barrage of pressure from the 21st minute on. Sophomore Peter Brown, who featured at right back, drove a shot from 12 yards out on the right side to start the action. Another chance followed six minutes later on a screamer of a chance from senior Yamann Sahlool from 24 yards out that flashed wide right.
Following another chance from Brown in the 37th, U-M was rewarded for its efforts in the 43rd minute on a corner kick. The sparkling service from junior Tristan Jacob found the head of a bounding Atuahene at the top of the six, who finished with the powerful header for the 1-0 lead. The helper for Jacob was the first of his U-M career.
The Wolverines put the match away in the 48th minute, as Mertz was on the receiving end of a stellar effort from senior Rylee Woods, who dashed down the left flank and sent a ball that deflected off the U of D defense that found Mertz. With a quick touch, Mertz finished near side for his second marker of the season and gave U-M the eventual winning scoreline of 2-0.
The back line of Brown, sophomore Marcello Borges, and seniors Lars Eckenrode, Andre Morris and Brett Nason excelled throughout the night, limiting the Titans quality of chances. Junior Evan Louro was up to task all night, making two saves for the clean sheet.
