ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team, behind second-half goals from freshman Jack Hallahan and sophomore Francis Atuahene, as well as a trio of saves from junior goalkeeper Evan Louro, blanked the Penn State Nittany Lions, 2-0, Sunday (Oct. 2) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Michigan dominated the early going, as Penn State seemed content to sit back and wait for counter attacks. U-M had a pristine chance in the early going in the 11th minute, as junior Billy Stevens sent a service just outside the six that was headed by sophomore Robbie Mertz, but Mertz's chance was turned away.
Mertz was at it again in the 33rd minute, as the mercurial central attacker took a little ball from Atuahene inside the area, but the touch with once again stopped by PSU's Evan Finney as the match held at 0-0.
Heading into the half with a 5-0 shot-on-goal advantage, U-M had its fortune continue, unlocking its attacking joy in the early going. The persistence was rewarded in the 63rd minute, as Hallahan, who gave the Nittany Lions fits all day, gave the Wolverines the breakthrough they desired. With composure on the top left side of the box, Hallahan beat a defender and then fired a left-footed bender that found the back of the net for his second goal of the campaign.
The Wolverines put the match out of reach 10 minutes later, as senior Rylee Woods sent a probing ball with his left foot from the left wing that found the head of Atuahene. His inch-perfect header resulted in the Wolverines jumping to the 2-0 lead.
Penn State found more room offensively following the Atuahene goal, but Louro and company were up to task, as the junior made three saves in the final nine minutes for the clean sheet.
