ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team cruised to a 5-0 shutout victory against Toronto in its second and final exhibition contest Sunday afternoon (Aug. 21) at Phyllis Ocker Field. The Wolverines earned goals from five different players and held Toronto to just one shot on goal.
Michigan surged to an early and sizable advantage with four goals in the opening half, including an immediate tally just 1:08 into the game on a deflection in front from graduate student Esther de Leijer, who got her stick on a senior Sina Lampe's shot from the top left side of the circle -- U-M's first attempt of the contest.
Michigan continued to contain play on the Varsity Blues' half of the field before converting on its second penalty corner opportunity at the 15:53 mark when sophomore Leah Cardarelli sent a drag flick high into the cage for her second goal of the weekend. Seniors Courtney Enge and Eliza Stein earned assists for the insert and the stop, respectively.
The Wolverines padded their advantage with two more goals in the final eight minutes of the half. Senior/junior Carly Bennett tipped in a centering pass from freshman Fay Keijer at 27:35, and just six minutes later, at 33:38, freshman Bree Bednarski added another, stealing the ball at the Toronto 25, carrying it into the circle unattested, and burying on the short side.
Freshman Meg Dowthwaite tallied the Wolverines' final goal -- and only goal of the second half -- at the 54:54 mark, receiving a pass from Lampe at the top left side of the circle and sending a long reverse shot into the opposite lower corner.
U-M outshot the Varsity Blues, 22-4, and outcornered them, 6-3. Junior goalkeeper Sam Swenson and freshman Claire Stemper combined for the shutout; Swenson faced no shots on goal through 64 minutes of play, while Stemper earned a save on a late Toronto corner. Varsity Blues' goalkeeper Sarah Fredo earned seven saves.
Michigan will officially open the 2016 season next weekend at the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. U-M will face North Carolina at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Aug. 27) before taking on host Wake Forest at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday (Aug. 28). Both games will be held at the Demon Deacons' Kentner Stadium.
