EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Despite a controlling first half and a late surge, the University of Michigan field hockey team dropped its annual exhibition contest against Michigan, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 20) at the Spartans' Ralph Young Field. The Wolverines were largely done in by a stretch of three MSU goals in eight minutes midway through the second half.
U-M outshot the Spartans, 11-2, and outcornered them, 3-2, in the first half, but Michigan State held the advantage at halftime after goals -- both on broken plays through the Wolverine backfield -- early and late in the frame. The Wolverines regrouped with a timeout after the latter and responded immediately, just 1:25 later at the 24:33 mark, as junior Katie Trombetta buried a deflected direct shot off a penalty-corner opportunity. Sophomore Emma Way and senior/junior Carly Bennett earned assists on the insert and the stop, respectively.
Michigan carried momentum into the second, dominating the first 10 minutes, before MSU stole it with a succession of penalty corners -- scoring two on corner rebounds at 48:31 and 51:15 before adding another on a fast break at 56:40.
The Wolverines rallied late with two goals -- and another that was waived off in the final 11 minutes. Senior Sina Lampe dribbled the ball to the front of the cage and backhanded a shot past MSU goalkeeper Sierra Patton into the lower right corner at 59:18. Sophomore Leah Cardarelli converted a stroke opportunity two minutes later, at 61:11, after Patton took out senior Courtney Enge on a breakaway in the circle.
In all, Michigan outshot MSU, 15-12, while the Spartans posted a 7-6 advantage in corners. Junior goalkeeper Sam Swenson posted two saves, while MSU's Patton and Katie Miller combined for four stops.
Michigan will return to the field tomorrow (Sunday, Aug. 21), hosting Toronto at 3:30 p.m. in exhibition action at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free.
