OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Despite a one-hitter from junior RHP Megan Betsa, the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan softball team struggled to generate offense in its NCAA Women's College World Series elimination game against No. 7 Florida State, falling 1-0 Sunday afternoon (June 5) at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. The loss ends the Wolverines' 2016 campaign with a stellar 52-7 record.
The Seminoles recorded the only run of the contest off a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning. FSU led off the inning with an infield single -- a chopper over the head of junior third baseman Lindsay Montemarano -- and drew a pair of walks to load the bases before scoring on a ball in the dirt. Michigan got out of the jam, leaving the bases loaded, on a pop foul in the next at-bat.
Betsa (28-5) grew stronger as the game wore on, retiring the next nine FSU batters in order through the fourth, fifth and sixth frames. She finished with four strikeouts and just one hit and four walks allowed. All but one Seminole baserunner came in the third inning.
Michigan matched a season low with three hits against Florida State's Jessica Burroughs. Sophomore catcher Aidan Falk went 2-for-3 with singles in the second and seventh innings, while junior shortstop Abby Ramirez singled in the sixth. The Wolverines, who also drew a pair of walks, threatened with two baserunners in the second before back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.
It was the final collegiate game for Michigan's seven-person senior class -- Lauren Connell, Sara Driesenga, Sierra Lawrence, Olivia Richvalsky, Sierra Romero, Mary Sbonek and Kelsey Susalla -- that contributed to a four-year record of 210-43, four Big Ten titles, a Big Ten Tournament title and three WCWS appearances over their tenure.
The Wolverines end the season with a 52-7 record, including a 21-2 Big Ten Conference mark and Big Ten title, and advanced to the WCWS for the 12th time in program history.
