ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team won the doubles point and three of the first four singles matches off court to dispatch of Purdue, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon (April 3) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point. U-M's No. 2 team of juniors Jathan Malik and Kevin Wong raced out to 3-0 lead, taking a 6-3 decision.
On the other courts, Michigan failed to hold serve in its first game to fall behind a break on both No. 1 and No. 3. U-M's No. 3 duo of freshmen Myles Schalet and Lubomir Cuba got its break back first, evening the score at 2-2 when Cuba ripped a service return cross court for the win.
Sophomore Runhao Hua and junior/sophomore Alex Knight got back on serve at 4-4 after falling behind early.
It was Schalet and Cuba who provided the point for Michigan as the duo broke Purdue at love when the Boilers were serving at 4-5. It marks the second straight win for the pair, taking a 6-4 decision at No. 3.
Schalet and junior/sophomore Davis Crocker each had little trouble in singles, taking identical 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 5 (Crocker) and No. 6 (Schalet) to push Michigan's lead to 3-0.
Purdue got a point back with a win at No. 1, cutting Michigan's lead to 3-1.
With Michigan needing just one more point to secure the match, all three matches on court went to third sets. Hua and Lin each raced out to 5-2 leads in their respective third sets. Hua won first on an ace, as Lin's match was abandoned at match point.
U-M kicks off a four-match road swing next weekend, starting on Friday (April 8) at Minnesota. The match will begin at 6 p.m. CDT.
