MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team won the doubles point and got singles wins at the Nos. 2, 3 and 6 position to regain the Little Brown Jug in a 4-1 road win over Minnesota on Friday evening (April 8) at the Baseline Tennis Center.
U-M used hot starts at courts No. 2 and No. 3 to take the doubles point. At No. 3, freshmen Lubomir Cuba and Myles Schalet broke early en route to a 6-1 victory.
Needing just one more win for the match's first point, juniors Jathan Malik and Tyler Gardiner grabbed a 6-3 decision at No. 2 just a few minutes later.
Minnesota tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1.
The Gophers' lead did not last long as sophomore Carter Lin took advantage of a late break in the second set for a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 to nudge Michigan back in front, 2-1.
With first sets in hand, sophomore Runhao Hua and junior/sophomore Alex Knight each raced out to 3-0 leads in their respective second sets.
Knight was the second Wolverine to leave court with a win, taking a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2 for U-M's third point on the evening.
It was freshman Maks Tekavec who clinched the match for the Maize and Blue, breaking late in each set for a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 6.
U-M concludes weekend action on Sunday (April 10), traveling to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers at noon CDT.
