ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With her best performance of the year on Saturday (March 11), University of Michigan women's gymnastics freshman Olivia Karas received both Big Ten Gymnast and Freshman of the Week honors today (Monday, March 14).
It marks the third time this season that Karas has won both honors in the same week. She has been Freshman of the Week a school-record nine times in 2016.
Karas became the 13th gymnast in Michigan history to score over a 39.600 in the all-around as she scored a career-high 39.625 to win the Big Five meet. The score tied for the 28th best in school history as she became the first U-M freshman to score a 39.600 or better since Jenny Deiley had a 39.675 vs. Nebraska in 2003.
The all-around victory was the fourth of the year for the freshman. She also won vault for the eighth time with a 9.950 to match her season best and tied for the win on floor with a 9.925. She matched her career high on beam with a 9.900 to give her three scores of 9.900 or better for the second time this season.
Karas and the Wolverines will be in Lincoln, Nebraska, for the Big Ten Championships on Saturday (March 19) at 4 p.m. CDT.
