ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team scored a season-high 197.425 and set season highs on vault, uneven bars and balance beam to win its tri-meet with Eastern Michigan and Maryland on Monday (Feb. 8) at Crisler Center.
The Wolverines have come a long way since an exhibition loss to Eastern Michigan back on Dec. 6. This team's talent level broke through tonight for a score that makes them the seventh team in the country to break 197.000 this season.
The Wolverines started with a season-high 49.300 on vault, leaped to bars where they flew to a season-best 49.350, and then landed on a season-high 49.450 on beam that tied for sixth best in school history.
Nine different routines scored 9.90 or better as Michigan clicked on every event throughout the night.
Junior Nicole Artz had her best all-around performance of the season with a 39.550. She won floor exercise with a 9.925 and was second on beam with a season-high 9.925. She also scored a 9.90 on bars to match a season high and tie for third.
Junior Talia Chiarelli was once again brilliant on beam. She drew "10" chants from the crowd after her spectacular routine that eventually earned a 9.95 to tie her season best.
Freshman Olivia Karas stayed undefeated on vault with a 9.95 that received a 10.0 from one judge. She also scored a 9.90 on floor later on.
The leadoff gymnasts set the tone all night. Freshman Emma McLean scored a 9.85 on vault for the first time in her young career. Sophomore Nichelle Christopherson joined the 9.90 club with her career-best score on bars. Karas had a 9.875 on beam, and senior Lindsay Williams had a 9.80 on floor.
Williams matched a career high with a 9.925 on bars, and Brianna Brown topped her season best on beam with a 9.90.
The Monday meet was the perfect way to rebound from the team's first loss of the season and avenge a setback in the preseason.
Prior to the meet Maryland showed up for warmups with "Flip for Chip" shirts to show their support for the Wolverines' season-long campaign to dedicate the season to the late Chip Hills.

Michigan will be back at home on Sunday (Feb. 14) for a 2 p.m. meet against Michigan State on Valentine's Day. The Wolverines will be wearing purple and will "Flip for Chip." The team encourages all fans to show up in purple as well in support of the Wolverines.
