ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's golf head coach Jan Dowling announced today (Thursday, Nov. 10) the signing of Ashley Kim to a National Letter of Intent for the 2017-18 season.
A Redondo Beach native, Kim is the 11th overall ranked golfer in California and 39th in 2017 Class while holding 117th overall in the Junior Golf (NJGS Ranking). Kim will join her sister, current junior Megan Kim, on the Wolverine roster next season making the Kims the third set of siblings to have played together at U-M joining the McCorkels and Bauers.
"When I first started following Ashley, she immediately impressed me with her calm yet extremely competitive demeanor," said Dowling. "Ashley's scores have steadily improved, where she is now very comfortable under par. She brings a great team spirit, high character and experience at the national level. This, combined with her innate ability to score makes us extremely excited to officially welcome her to our program."
In 2016, Kim qualified and compete in the USGA's Women's Amateur and Four Ball Championship. She represented Southern California at the Girls Junior America's Cup, tying for 11th and 10th at the Heather Farr Classic (77-71-75/223). She highlighted the season winning the Southern California PGA Toyota Tour Cup College Showcase (70-71/141).
During her prep season in 2015, Kim was instrumental in helping the Mira Costa High School golf team win the California High School State Championship, tying for eighth individually. That summer she had three medalist runner-up finishes while playing with the SCPGA Toyota Tour -- Oak Valley (71-72/143), College Showcase (71-75/146) and The Club (69-76/145).
Additionally, Kim won the Golfweek Invitational and represented Southern California at the Girls Junior America's Cup, tying for 13th. While playing with the AJGA, she tied for sixth at the Ryan Moore Championship (75-73-72/220) and tied for eighth at the Yang Foundation Junior Championship (77-72-77/226).
The Wolverines loses just one senior as Grace Choi closes her historic four-year career and will look to graduate with a degree in economics.
