HANOVER. N.H. -- Dartmouth's late goal with less than a minute left sealed a 3-2 loss for the No. 11 University of Michigan ice hockey team on Saturday night (Oct. 29) at Thompson Arena. Goaltender Jack LaFontaine made 32 saves in the losing effort.
Adam Winborg opened the scoring for Michigan at the 17:00 mark of the first period. The Stockholm, Sweden, native scored his first career goal on the power play, driving to the net on a feed from Alex Kile and Sam Piazza.
Two minutes into the second period, Dartmouth tied the contest at one apiece on a screened shot from Kevin Neiley at the top of the faceoff circles. The hosts took the lead at the 11:46 mark of the second period when Cam Strong got a pass from Will Graber in front of the net and shot it back-handed over a crouched down Lafontaine.
Kile put in the tying goal to make it two apiece at the 10:33, picking up a loose puck in the slot and driving to the net for the Wolverines' second power-play goal of the game.
Dartmouth put in the game-winner with 49 seconds remaining, when Troy Crema snuck one by Lafontaine on a shot from the right faceoff dot.
With the loss, Michigan falls to 4-4-1 against Dartmouth, breaking a four-game unbeaten streak against the Big Green.
The Wolverines will be back on the road next weekend as they travel southwest to take on the newest member of NCAA DI men's ice hockey, Arizona State University. The two programs will meet for the first time on Friday (Nov. 4) at the home of the NHL's Arizona Coyotes -- the Gila River Arena. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. MST.
