
Relay Wins, Freshmen Debut at Commodore Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team put together a solid opening day at Vanderbilt's Commodore Invitational on Friday (Jan. 15), highlighted by a win by the 4x800-meter relay team in its season debut.
The relay team made up of senior Nate Chapman, sophomores Brennan Munley, Ryan Wilkie and sophomore/freshman Chase Barnett recorded a time of 7:30.46 to take the win. Munley anchored the group, which topped the runner-up Auburn team (7:39.60) by more than nine seconds.
Fifth-year senior August Pappas ran to a third-place finish in the 5K race, recording a time of 14:31.27.
In his U-M debut, freshman Taylor McLaughlin placed fifth overall in the 200 meter race, running 21.78 to finish third in the third section. McLaughlin recorded the fastest time of any Wolverine, with senior Chris Maye placing 25th in 22.853 and classmate Philip Washington III not far behind in 27th at 22.90.
The Maize and Blue will return to action Saturday (Jan. 16) in Nashville, Tennessee, with competition beginning around 10 a.m. CST. The first event featuring a Wolverine will be the 60-meter dash at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, the remainder of the squad will be competing at Kent State's Doug Raymond Invitational. Events are scheduled for a 10 a.m. EST start in Ohio.
