
Benedetti Tabbed First Team All-American by NCBWA

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- University of Michigan baseball sophomore Carmen Benedetti has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-America first team, the organization announced this afternoon (Wednesday, June 10). Benedetti is the first Wolverine to be a first team All-American by the NCBWA.
Benedetti led the Wolverines and the Big Ten in doubles (25) and runs batted in (71) was second in the conference in batting average (.352) while being named to the All-Big Ten first team and the All-NCAA Louisville Regional team. The Grosse Pointe, Michigan, native had 82 hits on the season, 37 runs scored, two triples and five home runs. Benedetti also slugged at a .541 clip and has an on-base percentage of .418. He had a 29-game reached-base streak earlier this season and had 23 multi-hit games. On the mound, Benedetti had a 1.84 earned-run average with 23 strikeouts in 14.2 innings and three saves in his first year on the hill. Benedetti was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on April 20 and was a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy.
Michigan has had just one other player on the NCBWA All-America teams (Zach Putnam, 2nd team, 2008). Mike Cervenak and Bobby Scales earned honorable mention in 1999. Jake Bivens was named to the NCBWA's Freshman All-America first team earlier in the week.
Michigan (39-25) capped off a season that saw the Maize and Blue win its ninth Big Ten Tournament title and advance to the championship game of the NCAA Louisville Regional.
