
Wolverines Earn Four Titles on Final Day at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team picked up event titles in the 100-meter dash, 400m race, 5K and high jump and also set five personal bests on Friday (May 8), bringing the weekend total to six new PRs and five titles in all at the Toledo Outdoor Track and Field Facility.
Senior/junior Codie Nolan won the 100m dash in a personal-best 10.48 seconds, an improvement of nearly a quarter-second from his previous PR. That time ties him with Damon Devasher (1997) for the seventh-fastest time in program history, and it currently ranks third in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
Senior/junior Philip Washington III won the 400m race in 49.89, just 0.3 seconds shy of a season best. The Maize and Blue also went two-three in the 800m race; senior/junior Ben Reed finished second, and true freshman Ryan Wilkie was third with a new PR at 1:54.27. Washington also ran in the 200m dash.
In the 1,500m run, Wolverines claimed spots one through four, led by freshman Chase Barnett at 3:52.76 for the win. Barnett was competing unattached and finished ahead of junior/sophomore Alex Moran and senior/sophomore Nathan Karr wearing Maize and Blue in second and third, respectively. Freshman Costa Willets crossed the line fourth as an unattached competitor.
U-M also found success in the 5K, paced by sophomore Jarred Bratley, who won the event at 15:01.61. Unattached freshman Colin Martin was runner-up, and junior/sophomore Nick Renberg finished fifth. Senior/junior Nick Posada set a PR (15:30.42) to finish fifth.
Senior/junior Brandon Alfond placed third in the javelin, sending his first throw 180-3.75 ft. (54.95m). Elsewhere in the field, fifth-year senior Cody Riffle led a trio of Wolverines in the discus with a season best. After breaking his own shot put record yesterday (Thursday, May 7) with a throw of 62-7.25 ft. (19.08m), the Wolverine co-captain tossed 175-5 ft. (53.46m) to place fourth overall.
Next in the 14-man field was Riffle's classmate Justin Gaumer, who also threw a season best at 164-11.50 ft. (50.27m) for seventh place, and sophomore/freshman Grant Cartwright in eighth (158-11 ft.; 48.43m).
Both Wolverine high jumpers set new personal bests this afternoon, clearing 6-7.75 ft. (2.03m) to finish one-two in the event. Sophomore Louis Lamberti earned the event title after a clean first attempt, and junior/sophomore Stephen Sykes was the runner-up, clearing the bar on his second jump of the fourth height in the progression.
Sophomore/freshman Kevin Stephens Jr. was fifth in the long jump , three feet short of his personal best at 22-6.25 ft. (6.86m), and also competed in the triple jump, landing at 46-8.25 ft. (14.23m) for fourth. Sophomore/freshman Michael Hovater was also runner-up in the pole vault.
The postseason begins next weekend for the Wolverines, with the Big Ten Championships (May 15-17) in nearby East Lansing, Michigan, hosted by Michigan State University.

After breaking his own shot put record Thursday (May 7) with a throw of 62-7.25 ft. (19.08m), fifth-year senior Cody Riffle set a PR in the discus today. He threw 175-5 ft. (53.46m), nearly a four-foot improvement over his previous season best.
U-M picked up four titles and set five personal bests in all on Friday, bringing the weekend total to five wins and six PRs across five events.
Codie Nolan won the 100m dash in 10.48 seconds, a PR of nearly a quarter-second. That time is tied with Damon Devasher (1997) for seventh fastest in U-M history and currently ranks third fastest in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
