IRVINE, Calif. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team tallied 12 top-10 finishes today (Saturday, May 2) at the University of California Irvine's adidas/Steve Scott Invitational, highlighted by a win in the first track event of the day -- the 4x100-meter relay race -- at Anteater Track.
The team of sophomore/freshman Khoury Crenshaw, junior/sophomore Chris Maye, senior/junior Codie Nolan and graduate student John Spooney ran 40.43 to take the sprint relay crown, besting the field by more than half a second.
All but Spooney ran in the 100m dash as well, with Crenshaw pacing the Maize and Blue in seventh place at 10.74, followed by Nolan in ninth (10.78) and Maye in 10th (10.81). Once again, the Wolverines were among the top-finishing collegians in the race.
A pair of shot putters earned top-10 finishes this weekend, led by senior/junior Derek Sievers, who threw 59-5 ft. (18.11m) for sixth place. Sievers was joined in the top 10 by sophomore/freshman Grant Cartwright, who claimed eighth with a mark of 56 ft. (17.07m). The Wolverine duo competed in the field's championship flight, featuring three professionals at the top of the leaderboard. Among collegians, Sievers and Cartwright were third and fourth, respectively.
The same two throwers competed in the discus, with Sievers in 11th setting a new PR at 174-06 ft. (53. 19m) and Cartwright in 14th just one foot shy of his personal best.
In his outdoor season debut, fifth-year senior co-captain Patrick Cochran finished third in the high jump. Making his event debut, Cochran cleared 6-6.75 ft. (2.00m), the same height as sophomore Louis Lamberti, who needed one fewer attempt and thus finished runner-up in the event.
Sophomore/freshman Kevin Stephens Jr., who finished eighth in the long jump yesterday (Friday, May 1), placed third in the triple jump at 45-8 ft. (13.92m), and sophomore Michael Hovater was seventh in the pole vault.
In the 1,500m run, all four Wolverines in the field placed among the top 15 finishers. Senior/junior Jeff Sattler was the top-finishing collegiate athlete, running 3:51.18 for sixth overall. Senior/sophomore Nate Karr was next in 3:52.53, while junior/sophomore Jarred Bratley finished 10th, and sophomore/freshman Austin Benoit took 14th. The latter three Wolverines each made his 1,500m debut this weekend.
Senior/junior Ben Reed picked up a top-10 finish in the 800m run, clocking 1:53.49 to place third in his heat and ninth overall.
The Maize and Blue will continue competition next week, sending athletes to a trio of meets with an opportunity to establish season-closing qualifying marks for the NCAA East Regional later this month (May 28-30) in Jacksonville, Florida. U-M athletes will compete at one of three in-state meets, the Hillsdale Last Chance Classic (May 6-7) and Western Michigan's Jack Shaw Invitational (May 8); U-M's postseason begins in nearby East Lansing with the Big Ten Outdoor Championships (May 15-17).

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Jerry Clayton
On the graduation of many of the team's seniors ... "Yes, we want to congratulate all this year's graduates and their families. It is always great to see these kids celebrate their graduation. It is the most important thing for them and their family so we were able to make adjustments for that. We will have other opportunities for them next week close to home, so they will regroup next week and for this weekend they are just enjoying their graduation from Michigan."
On the impressive work of the distance group this weekend ... "As a whole, the distance group did a great job. That is what that meet (Payton Jordan Invitational) is about. They were able to put down some times, including a huge PR for Connor (Mora) in the steeple. Of course, Mason (Ferlic) and Morsi (Rayyan) have been so consistent throughout their careers here at Michigan and they continued to do that with great runs in the 5K."
On the opportunities the team has before them next weekend, with three nearby meets at their disposal to peak before the conference meet ... "We will sit down when we get back to Ann Arbor and reassess who we will need to continue competition to get better prepared for the conference meet. There will be some athletes who will sit next weekend, but we will have to make that decision early next week. Those decisions are based on doing what we need to do to put together the best team to try and compete at the Big Ten Championships, where our goal as a team is to finish in the top half of the conference."
