Michigan Head Coach Chris Whitten
On the ebbs and flows of the Big Ten Championships ... "We needed to be flexible. We were trying to play 72 holes with the forecast that we had. We just had to play when were able to play. We wish we could have the first day back. I think it was a surprise to everybody. We felt like we were ready to go; guys' games were in good shape. It was just not a sharp day for us -- simply put. The third round felt a lot more normal and the final round we had too many compounded mistakes. I think we had seven or eight double bogeys or worse. You just cannot afford to hit two bad shots in a row on a golf course like that. We need to get sharper all the way around, but the guys hit enough good shots today I am confident we can do that moving forward."
On Victoria National hosting this year's championship ... "It was our first time at this course. I would be happy to return here. I think the course does a good job of rewarding good shots. Even though our performance did not show it, I thought the course set up well for us. I really think we can play well here."
On if the team felt pressure with a possible NCAA Regional on the line ... "We were hoping we were already in a good position (for NCAA postseason) going into this event. We really came here treating this tournament just as all our other events. Big Tens is an important one for us and we would love to have our best showing of the year at this event , but for whatever reason it was just an off week for us. I know our preparation and approach was good."
On having to wait a week to see if Michigan is selected for an NCAA Regional ... "The guys have a lot of exams Monday through Wednesday, so we will probably take a short break. We have an end-of-the-year dinner on Wednesday night, which will be nice to get everyone together and talk about the year. Then we will practice as if we are expecting to go. I hope the numbers fall in our favor and the team is able to return to the postseason, which was a huge goal of ours this year. We will be preparing for that and hope it works out that way."
