HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team continued its three-day, split-squad weekend today (Friday, April 24) with a pair of titles in the field at Hillsdale College's Gina Relays. Senior/junior Derek Sievers and classmate Brad Bolton won the shot put and hammer throw, respectively, at the Chargers' Ken Herrick Outdoor Track.
Earlier this afternoon at Penn Relays, fifth-year senior Cody Riffle recorded the 10th-farthest shot put throw in program history. That mark stood on the performance list top 10 for just hours, as Sievers threw 61-2 ft. (18.68m) in Hillsdale's open shot put this afternoon for the fifth-farthest mark among Wolverines. Sophomore/freshman Grant Cartwright also competed in the field, claiming fourth with his mark of 55-1 ft. (16.80m).
U-M picked up its other title from the hammer throw, where Bolton threw a season-best 194-09 ft. (59.37m) to edge the runner-up, Eastern Michigan's Keith Williams, by three feet for the win. Bolton faced a field of 25 for his first event win of the 2015 season, and he now owns five of the top-10 marks in U-M history in the event.
Elsewhere in the field, sophomore Louis Lamberti matched a year-old personal record when he cleared 6-7 ft. (2.01m) to finish third in the high jump. Junior/sophomore Stephen Sykes finished 11th.
Freshman Ryan Wilkie and sophomore/freshman Kevin Stephens Jr. each earned seventh-place finishes. For Wilkie, it came in the 800m race (1:55.75), where he was just shy of matching his personal best, and Stephens earned his top-10 finish with a 22-1 ft. (6.73m) mark in the long jump.
The Maize and Blue will continue competition in Hillsdale tomorrow (Saturday, April 25), beginning with the javelin throw at 10 a.m., where U-M will be represented by Brandon Alfond. U-M's first appearance in the running events is not until 2:30 p.m. when Joshua Nance and Philip Washington III compete.
