RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -- After an opening 3.5-1.5 consolation first-round win over 12th seed Boise State, the University of Michigan women's golf team dropped its consolation semifinal match to No. 9 seed Houston, 4-1, today (Tuesday, March 24) to drop to the 11th/12th-place match at the SDSU Farms Invitational held at the Farms Golf Club. The Wolverines will close the three-day event facing No. 10 seed Kansas on Wednesday (March 25) at 8:35 a.m. PDT.
After dropping its thrilling qualifying match to No. 4 seed Pepperdine, 3-2, yesterday (Monday, March 23), U-M looked primed to make a move in today's opening consolation bracket first round. Led by junior Catherine Peters and freshman Megan Kim, the Maize and Blue pushed its way into the semifinal with a 3.5-1.5 win over Boise State. In the day's second match against Houston, the Wolverines fell down early in three matches and were unable to recover.
Peters, who went 2-0 on the day and is a perfect 3-0 in her three matches this week, highlighted play against Boise State with a come-from-behind 2-and-1 victory over Oceane Pelloille. Starting on the back nine, the duo exchanged three wins apiece through the first 10 holes and sat all-square. Pelloille struck on the front side, building a 2-up lead by winning Nos. 2 and 3, but Peters took the next three holes (Nos. 3, 4 and 6) to reclaim the lead at 1-up. She closed out the match winning the eighth hole after it was conceded for a 2-and-1 decision.
In U-M's lone win of its second match against Houston's Emily Gilbreth, Peters started on the back nine and dropped the opening hole to fall one-down early. She struck back, winning the 13th hole to even the match and built a commanding 5-up lead, winning five of her next six holes (Nos. 15, 17, 18, 1 and 2). Gilbreth cut into the lead with wins on Nos. 3 and 5 eventually conceded the seventh hole, giving Peters a 3-and-2 win.
Kim split her matches after posting a dominating 4-and-3 win over Boise State's Genevieve Ling and falling 4-and-2 to Houston's Megan Thothong. After a heartbreaking 1-up loss in the qualifier, freshman Emily White rebounded in her opening match as she posted her own 1-up victory against Boise State's McKenzie Ford. She followed with a 4-and-3 defeat to Houston's Yuka Kajiki in the semifinal.
In U-M's most dramatic match of the day, freshman Kathy Lim battled with Boise State's Sammie Pless down to the final hole. After each player recorded four wins apiece, Pless broke the tie, winning the sixth hole, and carried a 1-up lead heading into the final hole. Lim rallied to draw even and earn the half point. She fell down early and lost, 6-and-4, to Houston's Courtney Ferguson in her second match of the day.
With Michigan securing three wins against Boise State and Houston securing its victory over U-M with three victories, sophomore Grace Choi had both of her matches abandoned. With her trailing in both matches she was assessed two defeats.
