ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Freshman midfielder Abby Kastroll of the University of Michigan women's soccer team earned the first Big Ten weekly award of her career, being named the conference's Freshman of the Week, the Big Ten announced today (Tuesday, Oct. 6).
The Naples, Florida, native had a hand in both of Michigan's goals this past weekend, helping the Wolverines go 1-0-1. At Maryland, Kastroll netted the game-winning goal in the 36th minute, while at No. 25 Rutgers, she assisted on Michigan's only goal to help U-M secure a 1-1 tie in its first overtime match of the season.
With four goals and four assists in her freshman campaign, Kastroll is tied for second on the team with 12 points.
Kastroll is the second Wolverine to earn a Big Ten weekly award this season, as senior captain Christina Murillo received Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 22.
Kastroll and the Wolverines return home to host Northwestern on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. and Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. Michigan is currently 8-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Big Ten play, putting the Wolverines in a four-way tie for second place in the conference.
