The University of Michigan women's soccer captain's blog, "The Yellow Armband," is back for the 2015 season! Captains Maddie Clarfield, Corinne Harris, Christina Murillo and Christina Ordonez will alternate blogging weekly during the 2015 season. In this edition, Clarfield recaps a great weekend that featured two wins for women's soccer, a big win for Michigan football and several alums returning to Ann Arbor for the Illinois match.
Hello Wolverine fans!
I hope everyone had as good of a weekend as we did! Between getting two wins (including our first against a ranked opponent) and ANOTHER Michigan Football win and shutout, it was a great weekend to be a Wolverine!
We knew how important this weekend would be for our season, and we spent all of last week preparing for the two games. Northwestern was an extremely talented team that had been very successful at limiting opportunities for other teams. We knew that we were going to have to work really hard not to not concede anything, and make the most of our opportunities offensively. The team performance against Northwestern was one of the best performances we have had all season. The entire team worked for 90 minutes to defend together, and Corinne put on an absolute show with that goal. It was awesome to see the goal in person, but arguably more exciting to see it debut as #8 on SportsCenter's Top 10!
Our game against Illinois was also a battle, and although we were disappointed to give up a goal off a long throw-in, our performance was strong overall. We limited their opportunities, and the back line did a fantastic job stopping an extremely talented front line from Illinois. The team did a great job creating high quality chances, and Ani's finishing was some of the strongest we've seen all season. I am extremely proud of the way we fought for Michigan this weekend, and we are excited to keep moving forward!
We had the pleasure of having over 10 alumni from previous years at our game against Illinois. Playing in front of some of the Michigan greats, like Nkem Ezurike and Haley Kopmeyer, was an awesome feeling. It was the perfect example of not only playing for the 29 players currently on the team, but playing for the entire history of Michigan soccer.
This coming weekend we head on another long road trip to Wisconsin and Minnesota. Both teams have had great seasons, and it is an awesome opportunity for us to continue to work towards winning a Big Ten championship. We are very excited to head out and win for Michigan!
Go Blue!
