ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team notched its second shutout victory of the weekend, defeating Central Michigan, 3-0, on Sunday (Sept. 7) at U-M Soccer Stadium. Sophomore/freshman Ani Sarkisian (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill/Florida State) and sophomore Jessica Heifetz (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) each scored their first collegiate goals, while sophomore Nicky Waldeck (Chicago, Ill./Western Reserve Academy [OH]) tallied U-M's third goal of the night.

The Wolverines struck early and often, scoring a pair of goals just 1:52 apart in the 12th and 14th minutes. In the 12th minute, junior Corinne Harris (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) received the ball in the top of the box and played it out to sophomore Madisson Lewis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) on the left side of the box. Lewis carried it to the touch line and sent a low-driven ball into Sarkisian, who was making a run just outside the six-yard box. Sarkisian was there to knock it home and record her first collegiate goal.
Less than two minutes later, Sarkisian had a hand in Michigan's second goal, as she drove a corner in the air to the far post, where Waldeck was there to head it into the back of the net.
In the 23rd minute, Central Michigan got its only shot on goal of the half. A Chippewa corner kick led to a shot at an open net, but freshman Taylor Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich./Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) was there to clear the ball off the line and keep CMU off the board.
Michigan outshot Central Michigan, 9-2, in the opening half and put seven of its nine shots on goal.
Just 53 seconds into the second half, a Chippewa hand ball in the box led to a Wolverine penalty kick. Sarkisian stepped to the line and fired a shot, but CMU goalkeeper Maddy Bunnell came up with the save.
Heifetz's goal in the 81st minute sealed the deal for the Wolverines, putting them up 3-0. Harris played a ball into the box to Lewis, who laid it off in front of the net to Heifetz for the tap-in from two yards out.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Hinz (Eldersburg, Md. /Our Lady of Good Counsel) recorded her second shutout win of the weekend and third of the season and was forced to make just one save in tonight's match.
The Wolverines will begin Big Ten Conference play next weekend, when they host Minnesota on Friday (Sept. 12) at 8 p.m. and Wisconsin on Sunday (Sept. 14) at 2 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Stadium.
