ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) had 15 kills, and junior Carly Warner (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) added a double-double, as the University of Michigan volleyball team received 20 service errors from its opposition and opened the home slate with a thrilling five-set win over No. 19 Duke Friday night (Sept. 5) inside Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 21-25, 25-23, 25-16, 22-25 and 15-10.
Cole and freshman Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Calif./LaSalle) had 15 and 14 kills, respectively, to lead U-M's offense. Junior Ally Davis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), playing her first match of 2014, added 11 kills. Cole had five blocks, while Davis chipped in with four rejections. Juniors Tiffany Morales (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) and Lindsey Lerg (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) had 16 and 14 digs, respectively.
Knop had four kills and Warner 10 assists in the first set, but the Blue Devils took the opening frame 25-21. Back-to-back Duke attack errors gave the Wolverines an early 6-5 lead. Duke went up three (12-9) on a Breanna Atkinson kill but Michigan cut that lead to 15-14 on a Blue Devil error. Duke built its lead to as much as four at 21-17. Davis' kill made it 22-20 Blue Devils, but a Michigan service error and two Duke kills gave the Blue Devils the first set.
There were 14 ties and four lead changes in the second set with the Wolverines coming away with the two-point victory. A set error by Duke gave Michigan a 4-2 lead, but the Blue Devils fought back, taking a 12-9 advantage. Michigan tied the set at 12 on another bad set then had a 14-13 lead after a Duke service error. The set went back-and-forth with Cole tying it at 21 on a kill. Cole combined with Davis on a block assist, tying the set at 22. Davis' kill put Michigan up 23-22. With the set tied at 23, Davis and freshman Katherine Mahlke (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) had back-to-back kills to go into the locker room tied up.
The Maize and Blue hit .310 and used five Duke service errors in the third set for a runaway win. Cole's kill put U-M up 7-3. It was 11-5 after a Duke error and 15-7 off of Morales' service ace. Davis' termination put Michigan up 18-10. Knop had two kills in the final five points for the 25-16 victory.
The Wolverines were up as late at 22-21 in the fourth set, but four straight Duke points, including two service aces from Chloe DiPasquale, sent the match into five. Kills by Cole and Mahlke made it 13-9 Wolverines. The Blue Devils went up 16-13, but in the match of runs, Michigan went on a 4-0 mini-run, capped by blocks from Davis and Cole at 17-16. A Davis termination made it 20-18 U-M and the Wolverines were up 22-21 before the Duke comeback.
Michigan went up 4-2 in the fifth set as Davis and Cole combined on a block. Duke closed it to 7-6 but a 4-1 run was capped by a Morales service ace, her fourth of the night. Michigan ended the match on a Knop kill and Duke hitting error.
Michigan ended the match with nine blocks and six service aces. There were 35 ties and 16 lead changes in the match.
The Wolverines will host No. 20 North Carolina on the second day of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge Saturday afternoon (Sept. 6) at 5 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
