BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team received a career-high 24 kills from sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) and fought off a nine-point deficit to take the fourth set, but for the second straight night the Maize and Blue lost a five-set match, this time to Indiana Saturday night (Sept. 27) inside University Gym. Set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-27 and 15-10.
Cole had the 24 kills on a .488 hitting percentage and tied a career high with nine blocks. Freshman Adeja Lambert (Rockford, Ill./Keith Country Day) had 15 kills and four blocks while junior Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) tied a career high with 13 kill to go along with four blocks. Senior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had a double-double with 55 assists and 10 digs with four blocks, and freshman Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Calif./LaSalle) added a team high 15 digs.
Indiana had no answer for Cole in the first set, as she had eight kills on 10 attempts. Her kill gave Michigan an early 4-0 advantage, and Goode's termination put Michigan up 8-6. Indiana battled back to tie the set, but Cole's kill gave the Wolverines a 14-10 lead. Freshman Katherine Mahlke (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) made it 17-14 on a kill, and Lambert's termination put Michigan up 19-16. Indiana got within two points late, but Mahlke's kill forced set point and a Hoosier error gave the set to the Wolverines. Michigan hit .400 in the match's first set.
The Wolverines went up 6-4 in set two after blocks from Knop and Lambert and 9-7 after a Dannemiller kill, but IU took a 16-14 lead after a kill. Michigan tied the set at 19 after back-to-back kills from Cole and a block by Cole and Lambert. Indiana retook the lead and was up 22-21 after Taylor Lebo's kill. A Hoosier block gave IU set point. Mahlke fought off set point with a kill, but Amelia Anderson's termination tied the match heading to the locker room.
The Hoosiers took a 10-4 lead in set three after a block. Three straight Indiana attack errors cut its lead to three points (10-7), but another Hoosiers block made it 13-8. Cole's kill cut the lead to 18-15. Michigan got as close as 23-21 late after blocks from Lambert and Cole, but IU closed out the set on back-to-back kills.
Michigan was down 18-9 in the fourth set, but made an incredible comeback to force a fifth set. Dannemiller and Cole combined on a block to cut the led to 19-13. An IU net violation made the score 19-15. Dannemiller and Cole again had the block to make it a two-point deficit (19-17). Cole had a kill at 21-19. Michigan made it a one-point set (22-21) after senior/junior Olivia Reed (Plainwell, Mich./Plainwell) and Goode combined on a block. Knop's kill tied the set at 22 and Michigan had set point after Dannemiller's ace. Indiana fought that off and had match point, but a service error tied the score again at 25. Lambert had a kill and Knop a service ace for the Wolverines to complete the comeback.
The Maize and Blue had a 2-1 lead in set five after Lambert's termination, but Indiana took a 5-3 lead on a block. Michigan had the set tied at nine after Dannemiller's kill, but a service ace and block made it 12-9. Indiana then closed out the match on Taylor Lebo's kill at 15-10.
Michigan hit .254 for the match and had 13 team blocks. The Maize and Blue also had 18 service errors in the match.
