Dannemiller's Senior Night Performance Lifts U-M Past Michigan State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- On Senior Night inside Crisler Center, senior setter Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had a double-double with 41 assists and 17 digs as the University of Michigan volleyball team defeated in-state rival Michigan State, 3-1, Tuesday night (Sept. 30) to record its first Big Ten win of the season. Set scores were 25-20, 22-25, 26-24 and 25-23.

Dannemiller also had four service aces, four kills and a block in the win. Freshman Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Calif./LaSalle) also had a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs, while sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) had 12 kills and four blocks. Junior Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) was Michigan's third player in double figures in kills with 10. Junior Tiffany Morales (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) had 17 digs and seven assists, and freshman Adeja Lambert (Rockford, Ill./Keith Country Day) added a career-high 13 digs. Freshman Claire Kieffer-Wright (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) had eight kills and a team-best five blocks.
Dannemiller opened the match on the right foot with a pair of service aces. Lambert and Cole combined on a block to put the Maize and Blue up, 8-5. Michigan State tied the match at 12, but a mini 3-0 run was capped by Cole's kill. Lambert put Michigan up 19-16 and another Dannemiller ace made it 21-17. Michigan closed out the set on Knop's termination. Michigan forced the Spartans to a .061 hitting percentage in that first set.
Michigan State answered by winning the second set 25-22, although the Wolverines again jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after three MSU errors. Michigan State went up 5-4 after a Rachel Minarick service ace and never trailed in the set. It was 13-9 on a Spartan block and 20-14 after an Allyssah Fitterer kill. Michigan cut it to 24-22 on a pair of blocks from Cole, but a Wolverine attack error ended the rally.
Michigan trailed 12-7 in the third set, but rallied for the win. The Wolverines tied the set at 14 on blocks from Kieffer-Wright and Knop, then took the lead on Knop's termination. Michigan never trailed in that set, going up 22-19 and 24-21 on Spartan attack errors. Michigan State fought off two set points, but Cole's kill and a MSU error gave the Maize and Blue the 26-24 win.
Set four had five ties and three lead changes, as Michigan took a 10-8 lead after Kieffer-Wright's kill. The Wolverines were up 18-15 after a Cole kill and 20-16 on a Michigan State attack error. Kieffer-Wright joined Lambert on a block to make it 23-18. The Wolverines forced match point on a Kieffer-Wright kil and she ended it on a termination, one of five in that set.
Both teams had 52 kills for the match. Michigan hit .178, compared to .143 for State. The Wolverines did have a 72-60 dig advantage.
Michigan will complete the double dip with the Spartans on Friday night (Oct. 3) in East Lansing, Mich. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jenison Field House.
NOTES
• Michigan takes the lead in the State Pride Flag competition with Michigan State. The two teams will meet in East Lansing on Friday to decide who will win the flag.
• Michigan State leads the all-time series 49-40 after this match. The Wolverines won at home vs. the Spartans for the first time since the 2010 season.
• Senior Lexi Dannemiller was honored after tonight's match on Senior Night. Dannemiller had 41 assists and 17 digs, garnering her 31st career double-double.
• Dannemiller's four service aces established a new season high. It also tied a team season high as Tiffany Morales had four vs. Duke on Sept. 6.
• Freshman Claire-Kieffer Wright recorded her first career start as a Wolverine. She had eight kills and five blocks.
• Freshman Caroline Knop registered her third career double-double (14 kills, 11 digs). She also led Michigan in kills for the second time this season.
• Freshman Adeja Lambert had a career-high 13 digs in the win. Her previous high was eight at Purdue on Sept. 26.
