
Frosh Attack Shines in Five-Set Loss at No. 15 Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team received 44 kills from its rookies and fought back in set four to force a fifth-and-deciding set, but No. 15 Purdue opened with 6-0 run in the final frame to take a 3-2 win decision on Friday night (Sept. 26) inside Holloway Gymnasium. Set scores were 18-25, 25-17, 25-21, 22-25 and 15-9.
Freshmen Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Calif./LaSalle) and Adeja Lambert (Rockford, Ill./Keith Country Day) had 16 kills apiece, while classmate Katherine Mahlke (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) added 12 terminations. Knop made it a double-double with 18 digs. Both her marks were career highs. Lambert also had a career high in kills and had eight digs and four blocks. Sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) had 10 kills and two blocks, while senior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West), in her first action of the season, assisted on 48 kills to go along with nine digs and two blocks. Junior Tiffany Morales (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) had a match-high 19 digs in five sets.
The Wolverines hit .359 in the match's first set to take a 1-0 lead. Cole and Dannemiller combined on a block for an early 4-3 advantage. Knop's kill put Michigan up 8-6 and her termination made it 10-7. Junior Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) had a kill at 12-8 and Lambert put up a solo block to make it 14-9. Cole's kill gave U-M an 18-12 lead. It was 22-15 after Dannemiller's kill. Lambert closed out the set with a kill, its 17th of the set.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair until Purdue scored six straight points, as a Danielle Cuttino kill gave the Boilers an 11-5 lead. Mahlke cut the lead to 16-8 with a termination. Michigan was as close as seven points late in the set before tied up the match on Annie Drews' termination. Purdue hit .438 for the set, while the Wolverines hit .111, garnering just eight kills.
The Boilermakers improved their hitting percentage to .486 in the third set to take a 2-1 lead in the match. An ace from Knop tied the set at eight and Lambert's kill knotted it at 11. Michigan had a 13-12 lead with a Knop termination, but Purdue went up 16-13 on a Michigan error and 20-14 after a Boilermaker service ace. Cole had back-to-back kill at 22-20 but Drews ended the set with a kill.
Michigan fought back to force a fifth set, hitting .405 for the 25-22 win. Junior Lindsey Lerg's (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) service ace put the Maize and Blue up 5-3. Knop had a back-row kill at 6-3. It was 13-11 after Lambert's termination but Purdue went on a 5-1 run, taking a 16-14 lead on a block. The Wolverines took a 19-18 lead after Goode's kill and never trailed after that in the set. Lambert and Cole combined on a block for a 22-20 lead. Mahlke had a kill at 23-21 and Knop ended the set with a termination.
Purdue scored the first three points of the fifth set on blocks and had a 6-0 lead after its fourth block of the set. Michigan got as close at 9-7 after Knop's kill, but a Drews kill made it 12-8 Boilermakers. Purdue closed the match on a Michigan service error.
Michigan hit .261 for the match, compared to .342 for the Boilermakers. Purdue had a 12-6 block advantage and a slight 70-69 dig lead.
The Wolverines next travel to Bloomington, Ind., for a Saturday night (Sept. 27) match at Indiana. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside University Gym.
NOTES
• Michigan is 1-3 this season in five-set matches.
• Purdue now leads the all-time series 47-24 and has won six straight matches over the Wolverines.
• Freshman Caroline Knop had season highs in both kills (16) and digs (18) in tonight's match against Purdue. It also was her second career double-double.
• Freshman Adeja Lambert set a career high in kills (16), digs (8) and blocks (4). Her previous career high in kills was 11 on two occasions.
• Senior Lexi Dannemiller played in her first match of the season tonight vs. Purdue. She had 48 assists and nine digs.
• Junior Tiffany Morales led Michigan in digs for the 62nd time in her career. Morales had 19 digs on the night.
• Michigan is now 1-3 against ranked opponents after tonight's loss to No. 15 Purdue.
