Andrew Sinelli scored his first goal of the season, and first since scoring the game-winning goal in a 5-1 win over Western Michigan on March 16, 2013, clinching a CCHA Quarterfinal series for the Wolverines. Sinelli's goal was just the fifth by a Michigan defenseman this season.
Zach Hyman had the primary assist on Sinelli's first period goal, and now has seven points (4G, 3A) in his last six games. Hyman has 10 points on the season (5G, 5A), a new single-season high.
Michigan trailed 1-1 after the first period and has now led or been tied after one period of play in 21 of 26 contests this season. The Wolverines have outscored their opposition 21-14 in the first period through 26 games this season.
Michigan finished the night 0-for-3 on the man advantage, and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill. Tonight marked the third straight game that the Wolverines have had fewer power plays than the opposition.
Steve Racine made 20 saves in net and fell to 4-3-1 on the season. After starting the season 4-0-1, Racine is 0-3-0 in his last three decisions.
Michigan outshot Minnesota, 29-24 for the night. Minnesota's shot total was the lowest by a Michigan opponent since Michigan Tech had 23 shots on Nov. 2 in a 2-1 U-M victory.
With tonight's loss, Michigan fell to 6-5-1-1 in Big Ten play, and is tied with Ohio State for third place in the conference standings. With 20 points and 8 games remaining in conference play, Michigan sits five points behind Wisconsin, and 12 behind Minnesota, but the Wolverines have played two fewer games than both teams, as well as Ohio State.
