The University of Michigan women's basketball team (6-3) returns to Crisler Center on Friday (Dec. 19), hosting Canisius at 7 p.m. U-M is out to stop a two-game losing streak in the first of two straight games at Crisler.
Since head coach Kim Barnes Arico took over prior to the 2012-13 season, Michigan is 18-7 following a loss. During non-conference action in that span, U-M is 7-1 after dropping a contest.
The Wolverines and Golden Griffins are meeting for just the second time in program history. The first meeting came at Crisler on Dec. 21, 1995, when Michigan came away with a 104-67 win over Canisius. It was one of nine games in Michigan history that the Wolverines eclipsed the 100-point plateau.
Sophomore Siera Thompson leads the Big Ten and is fifth nationally with a .960 free throw percentage. She is 24-for-25 from the line this season and has made 24 straight free throws after missing her very first free throw of the season. For her career, Thompson has made 110-of-121 shots at the line for a .909 FT percentage.
Senior Cyesha Goree has recorded five double-doubles after going for 17 points and 11 rebounds at No. 5 Notre Dame (Dec. 13). She now has 18 career double-doubles, all of which have come in the last two seasons. She is now alone in eighth place on Michigan's all-time career double-doubles list.
The Wolverines lead the Big Ten in three-point field goal percentage at .401, hitting 55-of-137 shots from beyond the arc. Michigan also ranks eighth nationally in the category and is one of just 10 schools to be shooting 40 percent or better from three-point range. Michigan's trio of Madison Ristovski (.424, 6th), Siera Thompson (.410, 7th) and Katelynn Flaherty (.389, 10th) all rank in the top 15 of the Big Ten in three-point field goal percentage.
With 58 rebounds through nine games, senior Nicole Elmblad now has 552 for her career. She is the 21st Wolverine in school history to reach the 500-rebound plateau. She is now alone in 15th place on the career list and will pass Diane Dietz (559) with eight more rebounds. Elmblad has the third-most career rebounds of any active player in the Big Ten.
Michigan has had three players cross the 500-point plateau this season in Cyesha Goree (543), Shannon Smith (549) and Siera Thompson (545). Along with Nicole Elmblad (668), Michigan has had 57 players in its history score at least 500 points.
The Maize and Blue is currently ranked No. 24 in the latest edition of the NCAA RPI. U-M is the third-highest ranked Big Ten school.
