
Maize & Blue Drops Four-Set Decision to Northwestern

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Abby Cole, freshman Adeja Lambert and junior Krystalyn Goode combined for 48 kills on the night, but the University of Michigan volleyball team had 24 attack errors in a 3-1 loss to Northwestern Friday night (Oct. 31) inside Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 24-26 and 25-18.
Cole had a match-high 18 kills on the night, while Lambert had a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs. Goode had 14 kills and a .480 hitting percentage. Junior Lindsey Lerg led Michigan's defense with 14 digs, while senior Lexi Dannemiller had 53 assists.
Northwestern never trailed in taking the first two sets of the match. Michigan hit .480 in the first set, but the Wildcats used five aces for the 25-20 win. The Wildcats then hit .452 in the second set for the 25-19 win. Cole had five kills in that set, but eight hitting errors cost the Maize and Blue in that second set.
The Wolverines won a thrilling third set that featured 14 ties and eight lead changes. Michigan trailed 11-8 but scored the next five points off Cole's serve that featured a pair of Lambert terminations. The Wolverines fought back from an 18-16 deficit, taking a 21-20 lead off Dannemiller's kill. Northwestern went up 23-21 on a Kayla Morin kill, before a Goode kill, Wildcat error and Lambert kill gave Michigan set point. Northwestern fought off one set point, but Lambert's kill put Michigan up, 25-24, and a Wildcat error clinched the set for the Maize and Blue.
Northwestern won the match after the 25-18 fourth-set win. Dannemiller and Cole combined for a block to tie the set at five, but four straight points from the Wildcats followed, and Northwestern led the rest of the way.
Michigan hit .242 in tonight's match, while Northwestern had a .315 hitting percentage. The Wildcats had 13 team blocks and eight service aces.
