EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team came back from a late deficit and two set points to win set two, but the Wolverines fell to Michigan State in four sets Friday night (Oct. 3) inside Jenison Fieldhouse. Set scores were 25-21, 29-31, 25-23 and 26-24.
Sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) and junior Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) had 15 and 14 kills, respectively, to lead the Maize and Blue offense. Cole also had a team-best five blocks. Senior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 44 assists, nine digs and two blocks while junior Tiffany Morales (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) led the Wolverines with 17 digs and freshman Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Cailf./LaSalle) added nine kills and 15 digs.
Michigan State got out to a 4-0 lead in the first set and led 11-5 after a Spartan block as U-M called timeout. Goode's kill cut the MSU lead to 15-9 and junior Lindsey Lerg's (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) ace made it 17-14 Spartans. Michigan State upped its lead to 21-14 on a service ace but the Wolverines chipped away as Goode and freshman Adeja Lambert (Rockford, Ill./Keith Country Day) combined on a block to make it 23-17. Three straight Spartan attack errors gave MSU just a two-point lead (23-21), but a kill and block ended the set. Goode had five kills and two blocks in the opening set.
Michigan battled back to win the second set, trailing 21-18 before the 31-29 come-from-behind win. The Maize and Blue trailed early but rallied to take a 9-8 lead on blocks from Dannemiller and Cole. The two teams traded side out before a Wolverine error gave MSU a 19-17 lead. Taylor Galloway's kill put MSU up 21-18 but Cole and Dannemiller's block trimmed the lead to 21-20. Galloway's termination put Michigan State up 23-20 and the Spartans had set point at 24-20. A service error, an attack error and Lambert's kill made it 24-23. Then, back-to-back Spartan errors gave Michigan set point at 25-24. Michigan State had one more set point, but kills from Goode and Lambert put the Wolverines up 27-26. The teams traded side out before Cole's kill and a Michigan State error gave the Maize and Blue the 31-29 marathon win.
The Spartans got off to another hot start in set three, taking a 5-1 lead on Chloe Reinig's kill. Michigan chipped away at that lead and eventually led 10-9 on a Cole termination. Michigan State moved ahead 17-14 on a Wolverine attack error and went up 20-17 after a block. The Maize and Blue battled until the end, cutting the lead to 21-19 on a Cole kill. Michigan State had set point at 24-20, but three straight Lambert kills gave the Spartans just a one-point lead. MSU ended the set on a Reinig kill, giving the Spartans a 2-1 lead.
The Wolverines had an early lead (6-5) on Knop's kill but the Spartans quickly answered, going up 12-9 on Reinig's termination. Michigan called timeout after a Spartan block at 14-11. Knop tied the set at 15 on a kill and Michigan went up 19-18 on Cole's successful swing attempt. A Spartan error put Michigan up 20-18 and Cole kill made it 22-20. The Spartans tied the set at 23 after a Wolverine error, but the Maize and Blue forced a set point after Knop's termination. MSU staved off the set point after a Reinig kill and back-to-back service aces ended the match.
Michigan hit .175 for the match, compared to .177 for Michigan State. The Spartans had eight service aces while the two teams combined for 17 service errors.
Michigan will return to Cliff Keen Arena for the first time in almost three weeks next Friday (Oct. 10) as the Wolverines face Iowa. First serve is at 7 p.m. and it will be Michigan's seventh annual "Pink Match" as U-M raises awareness for breast cancer research.
