
Cole Collects 21 Kills as U-M Sweeps Scarlet Knights

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) continued her torrid play as she had 21 kills in just three sets, and the University of Michigan volleyball team defeated Rutgers in three sets Friday night (Oct. 17) inside College Ave. Gym. Set scores were 25-20, 25-19 and 25-21.
Cole had 21 kills on just 29 swings for a .621 hitting percentage. Senior Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 34 assists and seven digs to go along with a pair of blocks. Freshman Caroline Knop (Pasadena, Calif./LaSalle) led Michigan with 11 digs, while juniors Lindsey Lerg (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) and Tiffany Morales (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) tallied 10 digs apiece. Freshman Adeja Lambert (Rockford, Ill./Keith Country Day) had six kills, five digs and a pair of service aces.
The Wolverines went up 7-5 in set one after a Lambert kill. Junior Krystalyn Goode's (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) termination made it 9-8 and a Knop kill put the Maize and Blue ahead 11-8. A Lambert block and Dannemiller kill gave Michigan a 16-13 lead as the Scarlet Knights called timeout. Rutgers cut the lead to 18-17 with a block but Lambert's ace made it 21-19 and Cole kills at 23-19 and 24-20 gave the Wolverines set point. Dannemiller closed out the set by winning the joust for a kill.
Michigan went up 8-6 in set two after a solo block from Goode and a Dannemiller service ace. Cole's kill made it 12-10 and a Lambert termination put U-M up 15-12. Rutgers called timeout after an attack error gave the Wolverines a 17-13 advantage. Cole then had kills on three of Michigan's last four points, tallying 16 kill in the first two sets, to take the set 25-19 and lead 2-0 going to the locker room.
A Knop kill put Michigan up 3-1 early in the third set. Cole's termination made it 6-4 and Dannemiller's setter dump put the Wolverines up 8-6. Lambert had back-to-back kills and a solo block as the Maize and Blue went up 12-7. Cole had kills at 16-11 and 19-13 while a Scarlet Knight error made it a seven-point lead at 20-13. Goode's termination gave Michigan a 22-15 lead. The Wolverines set up match point (24-16) on a Rutgers error. The Scarlet Knights fought off five match points before Knop's kill gave the Wolverines the straight-set win.
Michigan hit .265 while holding Rutgers to a .052 hitting percentage. The Wolverines also held a 48-33 dig advantage.
U-M heads to College Park, Md., for a Saturday night (Oct. 18) match at Maryland. First serve is at 7 p.m. inside the XFINITY Pavilion.
