ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep), the No. 53-ranked player of the University of Michigan men's tennis team, fell to Ohio State's No. 62-ranked Ralf Steinbach by a score of 7-6 (8), 6-2, in the singles quarterfinals at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Sunday morning (Oct. 19) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Petrone's highlights included a victory over Notre Dame's ninth-seeded Josh Hagar in the Round of 16 by a score of 6-4, 6-4, a first-round defeat of Ohio State's Riley Reist, 7-5, 6-0, and a second round three-set triumph over Western Michigan's Jefta Kecic. Petrone also teamed up with freshman Runhao Hua doubles (Shanghai, China/Edison Academics) in doubles and together the tandem made it to the quarterfinals, where they lost to Notre Dame's duo of Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar, 8-0.
All seven of U-M's player saw action over the weekend, with redshirt freshman Alex Knight (Miami Shore, Fla./Michael Kropp HS), sophomore Kevin Wong (Hong Kong, China/Diocesa), senior Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone National), and Hua all reaching the second round of the singles draw. The team of Wong and Zhu advanced to the second round of the doubles draw, while redshirt freshman Davis Crocker (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and sophomore Tyler Gardiner (Novi, Mich./Northville) lost in the first round.
Michigan will return to the court for the Big Ten Individuals (Oct. 31-Nov. 3) in Minneapolis, Minn.
