TULSA, Okla. -- Junior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team concluded singles play at the ITA All-American Championships on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 8), dropping a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 decision to Kentucky's No. 3-ranked Eric Quigley in the consolation quarterfinals at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
After forcing the third set against Quigley, No. 8-ranked King stayed even through eight games until the Wildcat player broke serve late and claimed eight of the final nine points to eliminate King from the tournament. King's 2-2 record was his best in three career appearances at the prestigious ITA event.
King rebounded in the back draw after suffering his first loss of the season to Washington's Kyle McMorrow, 7-6, 6-2, in the opening round. He claimed back-to-back straight set-victories, including a 6-3, 6-4 decision against Ohio State's Devin McCarthy, to advance to the consolation quarterfinals.
King is now 5-2 on the season and has faced ranked opposition of six of his seven matches.
The Wolverines will return to competition next week at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, scheduled for Oct. 13-17 at Ohio State's Stickney Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.
