The University of Michigan baseball program held its annual Alumni Weekend (Fri-Sun., Sept. 24-26) as former Wolverines from the 1950s to 2010 ascended on Ann Arbor to see former teammates and friends, check out Michigan's football game and play golf in the annual outing at the U-M Golf Course.
The weekend opened on Saturday morning (Sept. 25) with U-M baseball holding its fifth annual alumni tailgate at the Wilpon Baseball Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The alums ate breakfast and met the current Wolverine roster before heading over to see the Michigan football team defeat Bowling Green, 65-21. Head coach Rich Maloney also gave out awards from the 2010 season from the Big Ten and national organizations and handed out team awards from the season. Chris Berset earned both the Ray Fisher (Most Valuable Player) and Ted Sizemore (Defensive Player of the Year) awards. Vinnie Sarafa earned the Steve Boros (Scholar Athlete) and the Wolverine (Spirit) award. Tyler Burgoon picked up the Geoff Zahn (Most Valuable Pitcher) award, while Ryan LaMarre was given the Bill Freehan (Offensive Player of the Year) award. To round out the honors, John Lorenz earned the Betty Simmons (Most Improved Player) award.
The weekend moved to the U-M Golf Course on Sunday (Sept. 26) morning as 92 golfers teed it up at the ninth annual alumni golf outing. The scramble featured three meals, a raffle, door prizes and individual and team awards.

"The alumni have played and will continue to play a significant role," Maloney said. "It made a great difference in our program in having alumni weekend and having so many guys come back and share their memories and stories with each other and really sharing their love for Michigan baseball.
"We are in a unique position because of our great tradition to have so many guys be so successful on and off the playing field," the head coach continued. "We have guys in the business field; we have doctors, lawyers, businessmen, Major League players. It's a unique cross-section group of guys that love Michigan baseball and who annually make the trek back to play in our golf outing and be a part of alumni weekend, which is very, very special.
"They are the reason Michigan baseball is what it is today," Maloney concluded. "Their experience was a championship experience with all of the titles they have won, the tournament titles and the College World Series appearances, it's been just a wonderful tradition and once again on Alumni Weekend they showed continued support for the program by coming back. It was just a wonderful weekend."
The 2011 baseball alumni weekend will take place on Oct. 1-2, 2011.
