ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team opened its 2010-11 season as host of the Wolverine Invitational and picked up a fifth-place team finish today (Sunday, Sept. 12) with a 924 54-hole tally at the U-M Golf Course.
The Wolverines opened with a 307 in yesterday's first round (Saturday, Sept. 11), before the skies opened up and the 17-team field battled Mother Nature in the second round. Despite the weather, U-M improved with a 305 in the second to close the first day with a 612 total, good for fourth. With blue skies and sunny weather today, the Wolverines were unable to capitalize early and finished with a 312 tally to drop a position into fifth.
Senior Min Yean Tan (Penang Island, Malaysia/Hills International College [Australia]) led the 90-player field after 36 holes but was unable to hold on to the lead in the final round after shooting a 79 today to close with a 225, which put her in a tie for third individually. She opened the first day with a 75 and a career-best tying 71.
Junior Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) improved with each round, tying for 21st with a 231 (78-77-76) in her 12th straight start, while freshman Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood), in her first collegiate tournament and start, tied for 27th at 233 (78-77-78). Other starter finishes include sophomore Caramia Sitompul (Jakarta, Indonesia/Bradenton Prep Academy [Bradenton, Fla.]) in 36th (76-80-79/235) and senior Katelin Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) in 78th (85-83-83/251).
With the home event, the Wolverines played the remainder of the 10-member squad as individuals. Leading the way was senior Jenn Cleary (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing), who tied for 36th with a career-best 54-hole total of 235 (79-77-79). Senior Louisa Shu (West Bloomfield, Mich./Birmingham Seaholm) cracked the top 50 -- 48th at 238 (79-81-78).
The Wolverines will continue their fall season next Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 25-26) for Michigan State's Mary Fossum Invitational at the Forest Akers West Course in East Lansing, Mich. The 54-hole event will start each day with a 9 a.m. shotgun.
