NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The 2010 University of Michigan men's track & field team, along with former distance runner Lex Williams (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter), earned All-Academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday (Aug. 2).
Michigan was one of 73 institutions to win the award, as a result of having a team-wide grade-point average above 3.0 for the entire academic year. The Wolverines were one of only four Big Ten schools -- along with Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota -- to earn the team recognition.
Williams was honored by the USTFCCCA for the second straight season. He wrapped up his career (2006-10) for the Maize & Blue earlier this summer, competing in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He was a 2007 NCAA Indoor Al-American as part of the distance medley relay, a two-time Big Ten Indoor champion, a two-time All-Big Ten selection and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or better and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or participated in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in their respective event.
